ONU... Blessing in Disguise

One thing that I love to talk about is my time at Ohio Northern University (ONU). It is a hot topic because I go here, but it is also a hot topic because so many other people know about the place too. It is a university at its heart, but to be honest it is much more for every here at ONU.

Most people that I talk to just see it as an expensive university that is known to be hard and for its pharmacy program. When I say that I go to ONU they ask me how I can pay for such an expensive school and why I would go for a major like Communications. I go into a long story how ONU was not that expensive for me and that I actually started as an Athletic Trainer. That is reason number one that I love Northern, I didn't like my major and talking with Jennifer Walton helped me find my right path with learning to Communicate with everyone. If I had went to another college or university I might not have had the same experiences and still be in a major that I am not happy with.

We then go into the next topic is how do people make it in a university that is so challenging. I respond with telling them that the ONU likes to work you hard to make sure you truly love what you are studying to be. If you find yourself struggling in a certain major that might mean that you are not actually interested in the subject. When you find this out ONU staff is there to help you find the right track to be on. I feel like mostly everyone that has switched their majors has find it to be the best decision or find in their lives. Which is reason number two that I love Northern so much.

Pharmacy is usually the last thing that people ask me about going to Ohio Northern is that why is it known for their pharmacy program and does that mean that the other majors are not that good. With this topic I rant to them saying that ONU's pharmacy program is one of the best in the state, but so are a lot of other programs. Alumni have success stories from the business field, to engineering, to exercise physiology. My cousin-in-law graduate from Northern in 2011-2012 and told me a story that he had a big exercise meeting with like 10 of the top exercise coaches in Ohio. Out of those 10, three went to the same university and it was Ohio Northern, all the rest had no other alumni with them. The lady next to him was an Ohio State alumnus and she asked why they were all from Ohio Northern and he answered saying "Ohio Northern may be small, but they teach us to be the best of the best".

To go off of that, his wife/ my cousin is a nursing alumnus from ONU and she told me that she had got a job at a children's hospital over four other nursing majors from bigger colleges who might have had better grades and resumes, but she swears that since she graduate from Ohio Northern University that she got hired. Reason number three why I love Northern, is just because we are taught and we learn to be the best in our fields not matter the major.

Lastly, I just wanted to say my motivation for loving Ohio Northern as much as I do. It's simple to, Ohio Northern University is my home. I have had the time of my life here and I can literally say of the people here will be a part of my life for as long as I live. ONU will always have my heart and the people that I have met will never be forgotten. Well that's all I have to say about that, love you Northern family.

  2. Way to represent! So glad you love being a Polar Bear. Many of us switch our majors, it is hard to know what you want to do until you actually get involved in it. Best wishes for a great year!

  3. Awesome story. I agree 100% that graduating from ONU gives us a huge advantage in getting a job after school. In fact, I think we were actually ranked #1 in Ohio and #3 in the national for "getting jobs after graduation". That is a pretty sweet statistic. I would also consider ONU my home. Its sad I only have one last year.

  4. I can so relate to this because I also changed my major to Communications. You are so right about the ONU faculty being so helpful. I'm not sure if I would've changed my major either if I went to different school. I'm glad you found something you love and enjoy. Go bears!
